Colonial Williamsburg, VA

On Friday we had a quick breakfast at the bakery, loaded the car, and checked out. Our passes were still good for the day, so we rode the trolley around and visited the historical museum.

There is an exhibit of musical instruments.

The glass harmonica was invented by Benjamin Franklin. Composers such as Mozart and Beethoven wrote for it. Sounds were made by rubbing damp fingers around the rim. Pitch was determined by the water in the glass. The sound was obviously too soft for perfomances in concert halls. Some of the Mozart pieces are now performed on the organ with quiet registrations. They are delightful.
