Hawai‘i

On the Ship      Maui      Hilo      Kauai      Oahu      California

Davidson's men's basketball team played in the Diamondhead Classic in Honolulu in 2017. I went early to take a 7-night cruise to three other islands. That left me five extra days before time for the tournament. So I spent a total of two and a half weeks in Hawaii and then headed to the Los Angeles area for a week before I flew back home. My neighbors Sherman and Nancy Kahn decided to do the same cruise. They had already planned to attend the tournament, too. We did some things together and went our own ways when that suited. On the ship we had supper together several times, once planned and other times we just ran into each other, but otherwise we went our separate ways. We also wound up on the same flights from Charlotte to LAX and then made the same connections to Honolulu, where we would board the ship the next day.

I spent the night at the Coconut Waikiki Hotel. It was clean, comfortable, reasonably priced, and included a good continental breakfast. I had a good view of the canal from my room, as I saw in the morning. I kept waking up starting around 2am, and finally got up before sunrise. There is a five-hour time difference from EST. After I got back to the room from breakfast, I took some pictures from my balcony of boats on the canal. The hotel was chosen for me by the travel agent mainly because it was a short ride to the cruise terminal.
