Heidelberg

April 30, 2026

At Heidelberg we toured the castle, visited the old town, and had more of a bus tour than was probably intended, as we avoided some traffic issues. I did not observe a prince falling in love with a waitress or hear anybody breaking out in song.

The castle overlooks the town.

Many of the buildings serve as fraternity housing for the university.

After a morning of touring, I found a leisurly time in the Market Square with a Diet Coke to be in order.

The statue of Hercules on the fountain shows him holding a club, symbolizing the strength to rebuild the city after 1700.

Lunch back on the ship was in the lounge and had a German theme. So that was my time to have a dark German beer. Those are not easy to find around home any more. The closest is Old Mecklenburg Brewery's Dunkel, which is their winter seasonal. They claim to use old German recipes for all their beers. This one was pretty good, and went well with the sausages.
