Rhine River Gorge
April 29, 2026
The Rhine has been the major trade route through central Europe from before there were written records. The gorge is a forty mile stretch where castles were built and tolls were collected. Many were damaged during the Thirty Years War. Some have been repaired and serve as hotels and private residences. Villages along the gorge were isolated, but a main railroad line runs by the river. I rode the train through here in 1993.

The Castle Katz sits above the entrance to the Lorelei bends in the river.

The rival castle to the Katz of course was nicknamed the Maus.
